Marduk – Iron Dawn EP – Mini Review

By James Terry  //  Music Reviews  //  No Comments

Marduk has decided to release an EP before going into the studio and tackling a full length. The release is entitled Iron Dawn is three new songs that bring the speed and chaos found within their back catalog. The album art is rather simple but contains a tank which sums up the sound of the album rather well as it feels like the soundtrack of a warzone. Warschau II- Headhunter Halfmoon begins with sirens droning in the background as the drums and guitars blast into blitzkrieg. The vocals twist and snarl as the cartoon sound of bombs dropping and sirens continue to drone in the background. Wacht Am Rhein Drumbeats of Death continues marching onward. Then the battle reaches a cease fire in Prochorrovka- Blood and Sunflowers which takes a slow droning approach which simply does not transition well. Although given the song titles I would guess that was somewhat the intent behind it to be the calm aftermath after the war has come to a close. The problem is it is hard to transition like that within three songs especially when the first two are so aggressive compared to the EP’s closer. It is an intriguing EP but it doesn’t do anything all too different from other EPs as it teases and attempts to convey a theme within three songs, which can be a difficult task. If you are a fan of Marduk this is up your alley and to an extent fans of black metal given your preference is more towards the thrash side with blasting drums and buzz saw riffs. Overall the effort is somewhat lackluster in my opinion as none of the tracks truly stand out, although Wacht Am Rhein Dumbeats of Death is my favorite of the three. [James Terry]
